Android 6.0 Marshmallow Update In The Mixing Bowl For LG G4 And LG G3: Report

LG could reportedly upgrade its LG G4 and LG G3 straight to the newly-announced Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which is yet to start rolling out.

The LG G2, LG G3 and LG G4 currently run Android 5.1 Lollipop and many expected LG to roll out an update to the latest version of the software, i.e. Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Some smartphones have already received Android 5.1.1, but LG apparently has other plans for its devices.

As Neuro Gadget reports, rather than upgrading its handsets to Android 5.1.1 first and then bump them up to Android 6.0, LG will wait until the latest version is ready and only then upgrade its devices straight to Marshmallow.

The move would not be unprecedented, as LG has pulled a similar scheme in the past. The company previously skipped the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update for some of its devices, boosting them straight to Lollipop.

On the other hand, while it's good to know that an update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow is in the cards, some may also be disappointed that LG wants to skip Android 5.1.1. The latest version of Lollipop brings a slew of bug fixes and performance enhancements to the table and many LG users would prefer to have Android 5.1.1 in the meantime, until the brand-new Marshmallow is ready to roll out.

Google unveiled its latest OS version back at its I/O 2015 conference, introducing the operating system as Android M. The company recently disclosed the official name as Android 6.0 Marshmallow and has so far released three previews to the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player, before the final version rolls out.

Google will release its new Android 6.0 in September, but non-Nexus devices will not get it so soon. The new OS should come running on the new-generation Nexus 5 (2015) and Nexus 6 (2016) and likely roll out to other Nexus hardware before hitting other devices from various OEMs.

LG devices, for instance, could get the update only next year, although there is some speculation suggesting that the flagship LG G4 could get it sooner, in late 2015 or early 2016. The older LG G3, however, will surely get it later than the LG G4.

When it comes to the LG G2, meanwhile, some rumors claimed that it may not receive an update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow at all. LG has yet to offer any official information in this regards, so it all remains in the rumor state at this point. As always in such cases, take all leaks and rumors with a grain of salt.
