The Galaxy Quest TV series has finally landed at its new home.
It was previously reported that Paramount Television was shopping around for a network or streaming platform to pick up its spin-off series based on the 1999 sci-fi comedy film Galaxy Quest, which starred Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver.
Now, it has been confirmed that the series is currently in development at Amazon Studios.
Because the Galaxy Quest spin-off series is in its early stage of development, it is not yet known if it will be a complete reboot of the movie or even if the original cast members will return.
The 1999 movie followed the story of the cast of actors that star in a silly Star Trek-like TV show that have to take on their roles in real-life after an alien race mistakes their show for a documentary. The cast is abducted and must run a spaceship to help the aliens.
Of course, the entire movie is a spoof on Star Trek and its loyal Trekkie fans, with Allen's character playing the role as a William Shatner-like character. The movie fell flat once it premiered but has since become a cult classic among sci-fi fans.
While it would be great to see Allen, Weaver and other cast members like Alan Rickman and Sam Rockwell reprise their roles, fans of the satirical film will be pleased to know that Galaxy Quest director Dean Parisot will direct and serve as executive producer on the Amazon series. Also retuning from the film is co-writer Robert Gordon, who will write the script and executive produce the pilot episode. Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein will also executive produce.
If the series is ordered for more than just the pilot, it will join the latest reboot trend of movies becoming TV shows, such as a Rush Hour series slated for CBS and a Minority Report series that will air on Fox.
