These days, owning a smartphone with a decent camera means that you can easily capture memories and events then share them online with everyone.
However, with so many photos, we usually end up forgetting that we even have them, leaving memories lost in the virtual world indefinitely. To help people remember significant occasions in their lives, Google Photos lately revealed the Rediscover This Day feature that lets you reminisce the good old days.
The feature is optional, which means you can rediscover previously posted photos in private but also have the option to share them with family and friends.
“By opting in, you’ll get cards in the Assistant view reminding you of photos from events in your past, including a collage featuring people and places from that day,” the company said
Besides bringing up photos from your past to look back and ponder on, the Rediscover This Day feature allows you to manually change a timestamp on photos and post them as an animation as GIF or video on various social media sharing networks like Facebook, What's App, and Instagram.
Another cool thing Google Photos lets you do is to search your files via people, places or things. For example, you can type in “flower” on the search bar and have every photo that has anything that looks like a flower filtered into the results.
Be warned though that the feature is currently not customizable so there is no way for Google Photos to eliminate photos that have been grouped together. You must be prepared for the fact that sometimes you will get a photo of your ex-lover as one of the results in your search if the photo has anything that resembles what you searched for.
The Google Photo feature isn’t really a new idea, but what sets it apart from Facebook and Timehop’s photo collage reminder is that it won’t send you daily notifications unless the photos are something worthwhile for you to remember.
“Something that was more of an 'event.' Something that’s going to emotionally resonate,” said Chris Perry, Product Lead for Google Photos Search.
Rediscover This Day is now available for iOS and web page use and is fully private until you opt to share it online via social network and email.
