Media conglomerate Turner Broadcasting has teamed up with the technology company Intel to develop a reality TV show that will attempt to find the next greatest wearable tech product.
Announced on Tuesday during the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, the new reality show will air in 2016 on TBS, with clips appearing on other Turner networks such as TNT, truTV and CNN.
The reality show, tentatively called America's Greatest Maker, will feature contestants competing against one another to create the next big wearable or smart device using the Intel Curie wearable module. The small chip module, which is built on Intel's Quark SE system, allows inventors to turns everyday items like a handbag into a wearable device. It was first showcased by Intel CEO Brian Krzanich at CES this year.
Joining Turner and Intel to create America's Greatest Maker is reality TV producer Mark Burnett (Shark Tank, Survivor, The Voice), who will serve as executive producer.
"This is much more than just a linear TV series. This is the next evolution of storytelling, told simultaneously across many platforms and in many different ways. This is the future," Burnett said.
The series will be a spin-off of Intel's "Make It Wearable" online challenge, which awarded $500,000 to the team that developed the wearable drone camera Nixie. The early stages of competition will be published on digital and social media platforms, and will air on TBS once the competition reaches the semifinals.
It seems like technology-based reality shows are a rising trend. Bravo aired a series that followed a group of entrepreneurs looking to make it in Silicon Valley called Start-Ups: Silicon Valley, although the series didn't last long before being canceled. General Electric is also getting into tech and science programming with a new documentary series called Breakthrough that will air on the National Geographic Channel in November.
