MSTY Is A Messaging App That Allows Users To Send Songs To Their Friends

There's a new app that has been created with the intention of combining Spotify and Snapchat.

The app is called MSTY, and it essentially allows users to send messages with images accompanied by songs. The app is also boasting that it is the first messaging service to partner with the likes of Apple Music, Sony, Universal and Warner.

The app was created by Grant Bovey, a celebrity businessman known for a boxing match with comedian Ricky Gervais. Users will have access to 2,000 songs when the app launches, however, that number is expected to quickly grow to 22 million through the service's partnerships.

"What MSTY can do, but others cannot, is invoke an emotional response that others cannot achieve," said MSTY founder and CEO Bovey in an interview with VentureBeat. "Sometimes simple words and images won't cut it — MSTY allows you to add that deeper level of emotion through the power of music."

MSTY itself stands for "My Song To You," and is one of a number of apps with this concept. MSTY, however, is different because of the partnership that it has with record labels and Apple Music. With these partnerships, the app is able to offer much more to users.

The goal for MSTY is that its app will appeal to a wider audience than that of Snapchat. For example, a 67-year-old, according to Bovey, might not be so interested in taking selfies, but they certainly could be more interested in sending messages through songs.

When a user signs up for the app, all they need to do is select a song from the MSTY library to send, customize their message and/or take a photo to send alongside the song and hit send. The music selection is hand-curated by the MSTY team, with songs being in playlists that correspond to things like mood.

Instead of sending the entire song, however, MSTY only sends 30-second clips. These clips are also not up to the user, but rather are edited by the MSTY team to convey particular moods. When a user plays back a song, they will also be given the option of buying the song from Apple Music.

This makes MSTY a potentially very interesting marketing technique for up-and-coming musicians. Not only does it help get music out there to people who might enjoy it, but it is also a very personal way of doing so.

It's not wrong to say that MSTY is just another messaging app to have on a smartphone, however, the creators of the app suggest that this is the best way to convey emotions because of how powerful music is when it comes to emotion.
