One of the most iconic comic books of all time could well be Alan Moore's Watchmen. However, the success of that graphic novel threw the very private Moore directly into the celebrity spotlight. Overwhelmed, Moore withdrew from his fans and stopped attending comic conventions, pretty much swearing them off for good.
That was then and this is now, but Moore has stayed true to his commitment to never attend another comic con (although he did once make an accidental appearance and later explained that he didn't realize it was a comic con). He also rarely does any signings outside of his native England.
Obviously, this situation makes it hard on fans who want nothing more than getting a copy of their Moore books signed.
Avatar Press has a solution that should make both Moore and his fans happy: a virtual comic con that allows fans to get personalized and signed issues of some of Moore's work.
For two weeks, Moore will sign any comics from his current Providence series, from Crossed +100 or Fashion Beast. Fans can also nab a signed copy of Moore's controversial screenplay for Neonomicon. Any order with two or more signed items also gets digital copies of Neonomicon #1-4, Crossed +100 1-6, Fashion Beast #1-10 and Another Suburban Romance graphic novel.
"For a dear friend or your own personal collection, this is a true once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have not only the signature of the greatest comic book writer in history, but also personalized!" states the Avatar Press website. "Each item will be uniquely hand-signed by Alan Moore and will ship to you packaged in a bag and board with a certificate of authenticity."
So basically, it's sort of like a mini comic con — but without the cost of a flight, hotel or expensive (and often disgusting) con food. You don't even have to stand in line: all you have to do is visit the Avatar Press website. Just keep in mind that this is a limited time event: get your orders in by August 26. Orders will begin shipping on October 15.
Signed comics range in price from $50 to $285, so there's pretty much something for everyone at every price point.
