Celebrity chef and television host Sandra Lee was released from Mount Sinai Roosevelt on Wednesday after successfully undergoing surgery in order to address an infection.
Members of Lee's staff stated through Facebook posts that the medical operation on the award-winning TV host lasted for over two hours on Tuesday, and that the doctors said that it "went very well."
Lee left the Manhattan hospital on Wednesday to return to her Westchester County home that she shares with New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo. She will continue to receive large doses of antibiotics intravenously.
Lee's recent hospitalization came after she had struggled to recover from a double mastectomy back in May. The infection she had attained is said to be one of several complications the 49-year-old Food Network chef contracted before and after her surgery.
Earlier this week, Lee posted a photograph on Facebook of her and Cuomo together, along with a note stating that they both decided that surgery is the best option to address the infection, calling her current predicament as an "incredible monster."
"I am a long way from where I was and a long way from where I need to be," Lee stated on the Facebook note.
"But at this point I understand that right now I just need to complete this unexpected phase of a tough journey."
The health issues that Lee has gone through lately have also taken their emotional toll on Cuomo who has supported her throughout her ordeal. The New York governor has dealt with the death of his father on New Year's Day, hours after he was sworn in for his second term as the state's chief executive.
While Cuomo declined to provide a comment on regarding Lee's medical status on Wednesday, he said that he is confident that she will be fine during an earlier interview.
The governor said that Lee's road to recovery is a long one, and that he himself has not had much experience in life dealing with breast cancer. He called cancer a "terrible disease," adding that its reconstructive aspect as well as its emotional impact has been a long and very difficult road.
Lee's representative said that Cuomo accompanied Lee when she went into the operating room on Tuesday and stayed with her throughout her recovery. The New York governor also picked Lee up from Mount Sinai Roosevelt when she was discharged.
