Drifter Is A Waterproof Speaker That Plays Music Without A Smartphone

Waterproof speakers come in handy when you need a soundtrack for your end-of-summer pool or beach party.

However, many of them still put your smartphone at risk of taking an unintentional dip in the water. No one wants to start the fall off by having to buy a new smartphone.

Drifter may just remedy that issue. This new waterproof speaker not only connects to your smartphone or Bluetooth-enabled device of choice, but it also connects to Wi-Fi so that Drifter can stream music all on its own.

Drifter has its own operating system that allows it to download and stream music and then play it back. The speaker integrates with most major music streaming services, such as Spotify, Beats and Apple Music, but not Pandora, according to TechCrunch. You can navigate to the various music apps using Drifter's touchscreen. The speaker also has an eight-hour battery life with which you can play a max of 16 GB worth of music stored on the device.

Drifter definitely seems to be targeting the more active among us. In addition to being completely waterproof and having a "rugged design," according to the product's website, Drifter can also fit into any GoPro mount. There's also a camera built into each Drifter, the purpose of which hasn't been revealed yet. However, if you really are the kind of person that likes to live life on the edge, that mystery might even make Drifter that much more appealing to you.

You can preorder Drifter now for a special price of $199.95, and the speaker is expected to ship in October, TechCrunch reports. Drifter will then retail for $299.95.
