HTC has confirmed that the One M8 is due for a refresh of the Sense software suite, but owners of the handsets won't receive the update to Sense 7 anytime soon.
The One M9 was born with Sense 7. While it may seem to One M8 owners as though the process of bringing Sense 7 should be relatively simple, HTC's Mo Versi, vice president of product management, indicated that the latest version of the Sense software suite won't reach the M8 this summer.
The One M8 won't receive Sense 7 until Android M launches, according to Versi. Google plans to launch Android M at some point during the third quarter of 2015, so One M8 owners can expect Sense no earlier than the fall.
For fans of HTC who are disappointed to have to continue to wait for Sense 7, the situation inside the company isn't too bright and sunny either. HTC has been quietly crumbling, though Wall Street has already taken note of the brand's devaluation.
HTC is trading below the amount of cash on hand the company has, which makes the brand of zero worth, mean absolutely zero to Wall Street. Because its stock is less than its cash holding, HTC would, theoretically, essentially have to reimburse anyone who bought the company in full.
Despite the hard times, Cher Wang, chairwoman and CEO of HTC, said she is confident that HTC's strategy for smartphones and connected devices is the right course of action for the company. The group's corporate initiatives will make sure HTC delivers on its goals and vision, she said during the company's earnings call last week.
"While the current market climate is challenging, I firmly believe the measures we are putting in place to streamline our operations, improve efficiency and focus, and increase our momentum will start to show results over the coming quarters," Wang said.
