Home media streaming service Plex has launched a rebuilt App for the iOS that introduces new features and makes several improvements on the former, outdated version of the app.
The old version of the Plex app for iOS gave users access to their library of TV shows and movies, both at home and remotely. However, users complained that the app looked basic, old and very different compared to the beautiful and content-laden Plex players in other platforms such as on the Xbox One and on the set-top boxes of Roku.
After years of waiting, iOS users are now given a complete overhaul for the Plex app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch owners. The app was built again from scratch with taking advantage of these iOS devices in mind, in addition to giving the app's aesthetics a definite upgrade.
First of all, the new Plex app for the iOS is now free to download, whereas the previous version required users to pay. The limited functionality of the free version of the app will still allow users to utilize it for a variety of purposes such as using the iOS device as a remote control for a Plex player or transfer pictures from the iOS device to Plex.
Users can purchase full functionality within the app, and for users that purchased the previous Plex app, the full set of features will automatically be unlocked.
The search and media discovery tools that can be seen in other versions of the Plex app have also now been included in the iOS version. The tools allow users to browse or filter content by categories such as director, actor and genre, with viewing recommendations now also displaying on the app.
The new iOS Plex app will also provide the Rotten Tomatoes scores of content on their pages, with the displays of the full reviews of the content to be added in the future.
The new Plex app will also be able to jump between existing chapter information to be able to skip easily through movies, as well as pull chapter information online for videos that were not encoded with the feature.
Lastly, Plex also said that it has incorporated Plex Sync 2.0 into the iOS version of the app, with the new app the first to feature the technology. Plex Sync 2.0 is about a hundred times faster in syncing content from Plex onto the mobile device, which address the main complaint of users for the Mobile Sync feature of Plex.
The new Plex app is now available on the App Store.
