Kara Zor-El Embraces Her Heroic Side In New 'Supergirl' Trailer

"Earth doesn't have just one hero anymore," states a new trailer released by CBS for upcoming superheroine series Supergirl. In this new footage, we see Kara Zor-El come to terms with her Kryptonian roots and start to become the second superhero that Earth needs.

Not only that, but we see some back story of the character, too, as she admits to a friend that she embraced the superhero the previous night by saving a plane full of passengers.

"I'm her, the woman who saved the plane!" actress Melissa Benoist exclaims with confidence in the clip.

Of course, that leads to the next scene in the trailer, when Supergirl becomes the top story on network news.

We also get a better look at more of the villains we can expect on Supergirl's first season, thanks to a crashed spaceship that's let a lot of bad guys loose on Earth. This is obviously not a job for Superman, who already has enough on his hands, but for Supergirl, who takes it upon herself to become the world's next champion.

CBS has high hopes for the Supergirl television series, having bypassed pilot season and taken the show directly to series.

The leaked first episode has already received decent reviews, though, with lots of mention about how the series has a message that empowers young women.

"Supergirl stands as a good superhero show so far and Melissa Benoist's portrayal of Kara as one of the few female leads on TV," wrote MoviePilot. "There's finally a female (superhero) protagonist and role model for women (setting the bar even before the release of the Wonder Woman movie in 2017)."

This seemed the goal of the series all along, with the writers committing early on to creating a story about a young woman not just dealing with superpowers, but also with life as a young woman in today's modern world.

"[She's] a very strong, independent young woman," said CBS Entertainment Chairman Nina Tassler to Entertainment Weekly in January. "She's coming into her own. She's dealing with family issues. She's dealing with work issues. It's a female empowerment story."

Supergirl premieres on CBS on October 26.
