A rebooted Mortal Kombat movie is something fans have been expecting for over a decade, and it seems it might just happen with Furious 7 and Aquaman director James Wan.
The director is one of the most sought after in the business, so it would make sense Warner Bros. would go after him to reboot Mortal Kombat.
The video game franchise has sold over 35 million copies since the first game came out, but where the live-action release is concerned, it hasn't been all that successful. The first film hit theaters back in 1995 and a sequel was released in 1997. While the first film was a success, the second was a complete disaster, and from there, no one tried to bring Mortal Kombat to the big screen.
It was eventually brought to the small screen via a live-action TV series that ran from 1998 to 1999. Obviously, it failed, but that didn't stop the rise of several live-action series on the web.
The big question right now is whether or not James Wan possesses the chops to bring the Mortal Kombat film franchise out from the belly of the beast.
If Wan can break the cycle with Mortal Kombat, then we could see the rise of video game movies on the same level of success as comic book movies. All it takes is for one video game film to have an enormous commercial success, and then the floodgates would open.
Comic book movies cannot carry the torch forever, so Hollywood will no doubt need another cash cow to lead the charge ahead of the film designed for Oscar nominations and the many documentaries.
When should we expect James Wan to begin work on Mortal Kombat?
If it is going to happen, then we expect it to take a while. The director's plate is full at the moment, so we suspect it could take the next four to five years.
