Acer Outs Affordable Cloudbooks: Will They Fly Against Google's Chromebooks?

Acer has launched two new Cloudbooks that are easy on the eye and on your pocket! Dubbed the Aspire One Cloudbook, the laptop will be available in two screen sizes and is gearing up to throw the gauntlet to Google's Chromebooks.

The Windows 10-based Aspire One Cloudbook laptop from Acer was announced on Tuesday, August 4, and will be available in 11-inch and 14-inch display sizes.

Touted as the affordable laptop, the smaller variant will start at $169, whereas the bigger 14-inch model will set consumers back by $199 (starting price), which is in the same price bracket as the Chromebooks.

"The Aspire One Cloudbook series is the perfect answer for those looking for an online-oriented and portable notebook with a full Windows experience," said Jerry Kao, president of Notebook Business Group, Acer Inc. "With cloud-enabled services1 such as Microsoft Office 365, OneDrive, and Acer's Build Your Own Cloud (BYOCTM), consumers can enjoy the convenience and value the cloud brings with these exciting new products."

The new Acer laptops are the perfect solution for those looking for a portable notebook that offers a complete Windows experience. The laptops will also take advantage of Microsoft's cloud-based software and will come with a year's free subscription for Office 365 Personal and 1TB of Microsoft OneDrive storage.

The 11-inch Aspire One Cloudbook's display has a 1366 by 768 pixel resolution. The device weighs 1.15kg and packs in the latest Intel Celeron mobile processor. The laptop also packs in 2GB of RAM and has HDMI, USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and SD Card ports. The on-board storage capacity; however, may disappoint many as it will come in 16GB or 32GB options.

The 14-inch Aspire One Cloudbook display has a 1366 by 768 pixel resolution. The notebook weighs 1.6kg and also houses the latest Intel Celeron mobile processor. It too packs in 2GB of RAM and has HDMI, USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and SD Card ports. The on-board storage capacity for this variant is 32GB or 64GB.

Both the laptops also have dual microphones so that users can access Cortana - Microsoft's personal assistant - better.

Wondering when the Aspire One Cloudbook will hit the shelves? The 11-inch version will release in North America this month itself with Europe following suit in September. The 14-inch model, on the other hand, will release in September and October for North America and Europe, respectively.

Whether the Acer Aspire One Cloudbook can fend off competition from the Google Chromebooks and eat into its market share remains to be seen.
