What if Batman is needed to clean up the streets of Gotham, but he's not available? Also — Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl and even Commissioner Gordon are otherwise engaged. Who ya gonna call?
This game mod for Batman: Arkham Knight – which might just be the greatest game mod of all time – answers that question with Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne's faithful butler, medic, tech assistant and (unofficial) adopted father. Like a dapper British secret agent, he zooms in to save the day (in the Batmobile, of course), kicks every square inch of butt, and never stains his tux.
For what it's worth, the scenario presented by this mod is not quite as far-fetched as it sounds. According to Batman's comic book history, before he became the Wayne family's trusted butler, Alfred had stints in the British Army, the Queen's Guard and MI-5. While it's true that Bruce received physical training while traveling the world, he learned field tactics and strategy from Alfred. (Alfred was also a trained actor, but that's another story.)
A YouTuber who publishes videos on a channel called "Batman Arkham Videos" found a way to play as Alfred after tweaking a mod that was created late last month. That mod allowed PC players to play as a variety of characters, including Joker, Scarecrow, Robin and more. This new mod is the first to allow gamers to play as Alfred.
According to the YouTube modder, Alfred's move set is very limited. "He cannot perform counter-attacks, environmental takedowns or dual takedowns," the modder explains, "but he can still kick plenty of a**."
Still not sold on "Be the Butler" as the best game mod ever? Just watch this.
These game mods are only available to PC players. Console gamers can't modify their copies of Batman: Arkham Knight.
