Star Wars: Rogue One is about to go before cameras, so it's kind of surprising we haven't heard much in the way of casting.
Felicity Jones is the headlining star of Rogue One, a standalone Star Wars "serious war movie" about a Dirty Dozen-style band of Rebels who undertake the dangerous, pre-A New Hope mission of stealing the original Death Star's blueprints. Jones will portray the lead Rebel, joined by the likes of Riz Ahmed and Diego Luna, fighting against an Imperial baddie played by Ben Mendelsohn. Forrest Whitaker is also believed to be among the cast in an unidentified role. Recently, it was rumored that Darth Vader will appear in the movie as well.
Sherlock's Jonathan Aris revealed today that he is joining the Rogue One cast as a character named "Senetor Jebel." That's the first actual character name to be revealed from the movie, which is being directed by Gareth Edwards. Nothing is known about the character or his importance to the plot.
In fact, the information appears to have been leaked earlier than Disney and Lucasfilm desired. Aris' Spotlight page revealed the information until it was found by BBC News. As soon as BBC reported its find, the Rogue One details were deleted from Aris' page. Oopsie.
BBC's reporter had the presence of mind to grab a screenshot of the page before the entry was deleted.
Aris is a prolific character actor, particularly among British cinema and television, where he's had dozens of roles over the last 20 years. He's currently best known as a forensic scientist named Anderson on the award-winning TV series Sherlock.
Star Wars: Rogue One arrives in theaters on December 16, 2016.
