'Jurassic World' Surpasses 'The Avengers' As The Third Highest-Grossing Movie Ever

It's no secret that Jurassic World is a success. Despite a somewhat middling critical reception, the movie just keeps making money... but how much money?

Well, at this point, it looks like dinosaurs beat superheroes: The Hollywood Reporter claims that Jurassic World is now the third-highest grossing movie of all time, knocking Marvel's The Avengers from its spot.

That's not just impressive, it sounds impossible: during its original 2012 run, The Avengers made well over a billion dollars. How can anything that's not another Marvel movie even come close to making that much money?

One way or another, Jurassic World did it: as of this writing, the film has made approximately $1.522 billion — putting it just ahead of Marvel's flagship film, which managed to rake in $1.520 billion. That may seem like an insignificant gap, but remember: we're talking about billions of dollars here. That .02 difference is worth roughly two million dollars.

Even more impressive is that Jurassic World is the third movie in 2015 to gross over one billion dollars worldwide: Universal's action-adventure joins the likes of Furious 7 and Marvel's Avengers sequel, Age of Ultron. All things considered, it's looking like 2015 will be a good year for movie studios (especially with Star Wars Episode VII set for release this December).

However, while Jurassic Park does still have some time left in theaters, it won't be catching up to the first- and second-highest grossing films anytime soon: James Cameron's Avatar and Titanic are still a long ways away from being dethroned, with the films sitting at an unbelievable $2.788 billion and $2.186 billion respectively.

So, if you're one of the seven people who hasn't seen the most popular movie of the year, you're in luck: Jurassic World is still in theaters.
