Dogs are long considered to be man's best friend, but sometimes they can also give their own furry friends a helping hand (or paw).
Two canine buddies who were destined to be put to sleep were saved from their predicament by the timely efforts of an Atlanta-based pet rescue group known as Angels Among Us and other concerned people on social media networks.
The future looked bleak for Keira and Kala as they were bound to be euthanized because no one seemed to be interested in adopting them from the local shelter that they were being kept in.
When news of the two dogs reached members of Angels Among Us, they quickly went to the shelter and helped Keira and Kala. The group specializes in saving animals from known high-kill pet shelters in northern Georgia and finding suitable permanent and foster homes for them.
They decided to take a photographed of Keira and Kala while they were kept in their cage in order to share it on different social media networks in the hopes of finding prospective pet owners for the two dogs. The image showed Kala hugging her friend Keira as if to comfort each other as they were hours away from being put to sleep.
Angels Among Us shared the photo on its Face account along with a message written from the dogs' perspective.
"I'm Kala. This is Keira. We're so scared in here," the note on the social media post read.
"The people working in the shelters see how scared we are but just told each other that today is our deadline. We have to have someone rescue us or we'll be 'next.'"
The note on the post went on to make a plea to concerned pet lovers online.
"If no one saves us, someone will take her [Keira] away from me. I'll see her as she goes down the hallway. She won't come back and I'll cry. They'll come for me next and I won't be as brave."
The post garnered more than 9,000 Facebook shares and 16,000 likes, resulting in an outpour of support for the canine pals. The two dogs were adopted within a couple of hours after the plea was posted.
Angels Among Us posted a new image of Keira and Kala together with their new owner. The animal rescue group said that both dogs are safe, and that their members thank the people on social media who helped in saving two pals by sharing the post, donating and sending adoption offers.
