There is a host of Android smartphones to choose from, and it can sometimes be very difficult to find the right one. But what if you could vote on features you want in your ideal phone?
That's the idea behind the Ubik Uno. Want a device with a better screen resolution? Or one with more onboard storage? Well, you can vote for those features to be included in the next Ubik smartphone.
"With the introduction of our first phone, we wanted to offer consumers a mobile phone with flagship features such as the fastest processor, high-res camera and bezel-less design at an affordable price," said Ubik USA Business Director Edgardo Jovet. "Moving forward, however, our mission is to assign every function a price and let our community choose what they like and utilize their input to build our next model."
While users can vote on what features they would like improved for the next Ubik phone, the Ubik Uno certainly isn't a bad device. It includes a MediaTek MK6795 2.2-Ghz processor with 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of onboard storage. The rear-facing camera is 20 megapixels and is made by Sony, with the front-facing camera being 8-megapixels.
Perhaps one of the features for update could be the display. It comes in at 1080p, but many companies are now including 2K displays in their devices.
For the cost, however, the Ubik Uno is a powerhouse. Coming in at $345 unlocked when it gets released later this year, early backers on Kickstarter can get the device for as little as $280, $299 or $320, depending on how quickly they back the project. At the time of this writing, the project had already raised $42,271 of its $200,000 funding goal.
As time goes on, more and more phones are being released, making the Android smartphone market very noisy. Allowing users to vote on which features they want included in their phone seems like a great idea to not only build a base of users who actually want the device that Ubik is making, but who also feel attached to the making of the device and might be more inclined to purchase it because of that.
While the Ubik Uno is certainly a decent smartphone, what will really be interesting is to see what comes after the Ubik and how users shaped the second version of the phone.
Ubik will begin production of the Ubik Uno immediately after the Kickstarter campaign, with delivery dates for those that fund the project set for September of this year.
