Dell Unveils The Latitude 12 Rugged Tablet Built For Harsh Environments

If you are a solider in a war zone, hiking through the mountains or trekking through the snow, then you will need a tablet that can withstand harsh conditions. Luckily, Dell announced on Tuesday its latest and toughest tablet yet that is built to work in these extreme environments.

The new Latitude 12 Rugged Tablet is the latest addition to the Dell Rugged portfolio that is designed to perform despite extreme temperatures, water, dust and even a four-foot drop.

"Dell Rugged devices are critical to many industries including military, emergency response, public safety, industrial work, scientists and even adventurers. It's important for Dell's Latitude Rugged devices to provide superior computing power and the mobile capabilities they require to accomplish their jobs," Drew Moore, executive director and general Manager of Rugged Mobility Products at Dell said in a press release. "Whether it's a first responder to an emergency or an avid outdoorsman scaling an untouched summit for the first time, Dell's Latitude 12 Rugged Tablet is built to deliver the performance they need, wherever they need it, without worrying about what their environment throws at them."

Light and thin enough to take on-the-go at 3.6 pounds and one inch thick, the tablet has an 11.6-inch, 1366 by 768 pixel HD screen that has anti-glare and anti-reflection technology that allows the user to view it clearly in sunlight. It also has multi-touch capabilities that work even when the user is wearing gloves.

The tablet has fourth generation QuadCool thermal management that allows the mobile computer to work in severe temperatures and is equipped with a fifth generation Intel Core processor.

The Dell tablet has up to 512 GB of storage and connects anywhere with 802.11ac Wi-Fi, along with GPS and Bluetooth 4.0 capabilities as well as the option for 4G LTE.

Consumers will be able to get 12 hours of battery life with two fully-charged batteries on the Latitude 12 Rugged Tablet, with the option to swap out the batteries.

The tablet has USB, microHDMI, microSD card and micro serial ports built in, and consumers can work through any environment thanks to the Pogo-pin connectors that let them attach an optional keyboard dock (that is waterproof and dust-resistant) and other accessories such as a desk dock, vehicle dock, stylus and other items, including barcode scanners or magnetic strip readers.

Dell has not yet revealed the price for the Latitude 12 Rugged Tablet that is meant for the outdoors, but the Latitude 12 Rugged Extreme laptop starts at $3,649. The Rugged Tablet will hit shelves at the end of July.
