If you own a Nvidia Shield and are a fan of "Half-Life 2" and "Portal," then today is your lucky day, pal. Valve and NVidia have announced that ports of the PC version of both games will launch on the Shield game system to allow gamers to play while on the go.
Both "Half-Life 2" and "Portal" are the first big-name PC classics to be ported to the Shield, a possible sign that Nvidia might have a winner on its hands. The announcement of both games coming to the Shield came after Valve and Nvidia announced a partnership back in March, which could mean more games are incoming.
"Nvidia has done a remarkable job bringing both 'Half-Life 2' and 'Portal' to Shield," said Doug Lombardi, vice president of marketing at Valve. "We're playing both games here on our Shields and fans of both franchises can expect the same gameplay they've come to love on the PC. We're huge 'Half-Life' fans. So bringing it to Shield was a labor for love for more than a few members of the team."
Both games are available on the Google Play Store, though you should keep in mind that they are designed exclusively for the Shield, so even though you can make the purchase on a different Android device, it will not work.
When it comes to pricing, it's not bad at all. Interested parties can pick up both games for just $9.99.
Apart from the Nvidia Shield, it is quite possible for Valve to port these games to other devices, but the company may require a particular device to have a traditional control scheme instead of just a touchscreen. And we all know touchscreen-only devices are terrible for playing technical video games.
Are more Valve titles coming to Shield? Valve and Nvidia have not announced anything as of yet, but we cannot help but think if "Half-Life 2" and "Portal" performs admirably on the Shield, both companies might work toward getting other games on the platform. One such game that is ripe for a mobile port is "Left 4 Dead," as even the less-capable gaming PCs in the world should be able to run this game no problem.
It would be great for players to have the option to play this classic title while on the train, or on a lunch break at work.
Furthermore, the Nvidia Shield hardware system is available for $199 for a limited time only.
