Google has announced that it's testing a new buy button feature for its mobile search, which will better enhance the online shopping experience for mobile users.
Called "Purchases on Google," the smarter search service will let users shop on-the-go, using Google Voice to bring up shopping searches where they can make purchases directly from their smartphones.
The Google Voice shopping feature called "conversational search" works by allowing the consumer to vocalize a query in colloquial language through Google Now to bring up product results.
Consumers can ask Google Now for the best item to buy – such as sunscreen – and it will bring up the three highest-rated products based on customer reviews. Users can also utilize Google Voice for reviews on an item such as a tech gadget, and the search engine will provide a Google card with the product's ratings and specs — along with another card to help track the price of the product for the best deal.
In addition to Google Voice for conversationally bringing up products for purchase, the new search feature will display product ads in the search results. Consumers will be able to click on the product and use the buy button feature, which provides a checkout option for direct purchases from any smartphone.
Google will store payment information so the consumer can make the purchase in just a tap, and it will support Android Pay when the payment service rolls out later this year.
Retailers who partake in the company's shopping campaign will have their product images, price and business name shown on Google search, paying Google on a cost-per-click basis. Local inventory ads will display related products people are searching for nearby. When the user clicks on that ad, they will be directed to a Google-hosted page where they can view that product and the store's inventory, as well as get directions for shopping on location.
Retailers can also become Google Trusted Store sellers for free, receiving a badge for display on Google Shopping to let shoppers know their business is a reliable place to shop. A review extension feature will also help shoppers make the best product decision based on five star reviews showed on Google AdWords and Google Shopping.
Google said about a dozen merchants have signed on for Purchase on Google, and it has plans to expand the list of participating retailers.
The company is also deep-linking apps from shopping ads that will redirect users to a particular shopping app like Amazon or eBay if the product they click on shows up in the search results.
Google first announced that it would explore its own buy button feature at Re/code's Code Conference in May.
