LG is intent on keeping up with the competition on all fronts. Just several hours after the Korean firm announced its trio of G Pad tablets and a couple of weeks before the long-awaited launch of its flagship smartphone, LG released a new glamour video teasing us with its up-and-coming G Watch.
The G Watch, which is LG's first foray into the rapidly burgeoning wearable devices market, is one of the first few devices to be powered by Android Wear, Google's new platform designed specifically for wearable gadgets. Other upcoming smartwatches to use the new platform is the round-faced Moto 360, which was announced around the same time LG announced the pending release of its first smartwatch on Twitter.
The video does not provide anything specific about the G Watch, although it describes the square-faced smartwatch as having a "metal body for a timeless look" and "sleek and lightweight for all-day comfort." The video also says that the G Watch is "ready for anything, anytime with a single charge."
To recap other information that we already know, the video also mentions that the G Watch is "waterproof for your outdoor activities." It also confirms earlier reports that the new smartwatch will come in Stealth Black and Champagne Gold. The G Watch will also have an "always on" display, something to watch out for since all smartwatches on the market currently have a tap to wake function.
Being one of the first wearable devices to run on Android Wear, the G Watch will likely make heavy use of Google Now's voice recognition. With the new app-driven platform, users can initiate commands or ask questions starting with the "OK Google" hotword. The software behind the G Watch also has the ability to understand a user's context and deliver messages straight through the device wearer's wrist.
"The wide variety of Android applications means you'll receive the latest posts and updates from your favorite social apps, chats from your preferred messaging apps, notifications from shopping, news and photography apps, and more," says Google senior vice president for Android, Chrome and apps Sundar Pichai in a blog post explaining the features of Android Wear.
No word has yet been released on pricing and availability of the G Watch, although rumors have surfaced from the U.K. that LG's first smartwatch will debut for less than $300 sometime in the second quarter of 2014.
