Comic-Con 2015: Riverdale Will Rock Out With The Ramones In Crossover ‘Archie’ Issue

Archie and the gang recently got a makeover in Mark Waid's Archie #1 comics, with artist Fiona Staples giving the characters a more trendy and realistic look, and now all of Riverdale is ready to rock out in a crossover anniversary celebration comic with legendary punk rock band The Ramones.

At Saturday evening's "Comics & Pop Music: Making New News" panel at San Diego Comic-Con, writers Alex Segura and Matthew Rosenberg and artist Gisele Lagace announced that in celebration of the 75th anniversary of Archie Comics and the 40th anniversary of The Ramones, the two are joining forces to bring fans the one-sheet crossover called Archie Meets Ramones.

While animating the punk rockers may seem a bit unusual for an Archie comic, bringing rock 'n' roll to Riverdale is exactly the edgier direction Archie #1 is taking.

"It might seem strange to some people to combine these things, but there's really no divide for me... Archie is what got me into comics, the Ramones are what got me into punk rock, and those two things have always been connected for me," Rosenberg told said. "The Ramones are my punk rock heroes, they're really very comic booky, and Archie has a long history of being connected to music, and being willing to try new things and do cool new stuff, so to me, this makes perfect sense."

Segura described the one-shot as being "super fun," and it will feature cover art by Lagace and other "amazing artists" that could not yet be revealed.

"Getting to draw Archie Meets Ramones has me fangirling in excitement," Lagace said. "I will draw with the energy and passion of a Ramone to ensure my beloved Riverdale gets a Rock 'N' Roll High School."

This is not the first time a rock band has been featured in the Archie Comics crossover. Kiss was previously given this honor.

Archie fans can also preorder the crossover issue with the latest Sharknado film, properly titled Archie vs. Sharknado, that will be released before the Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! July 22 debut on Syfy.
