Talk about setting the Internet on fire.
University of Texas kicker Nick Rose did just that over the weekend, amazingly kicking an 80-yard field goal through the uprights with relative ease. No camera tricks, no funny stuff...a straight-up 80-yard field goal. Now, that's impressive.
Rose documented the insane field goal at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, tweeting out the short video clip to the masses.
What's really incredible about Rose's kick was that it destroyed his previous career-long field goal of 51 yards. That and the Longhorns senior's kick clears the uprights with generous leeway.
Watching this clip got us thinking that if Rose could pull off this feat—pardon the pun—regularly, then imagine what a weapon he'd make in the National Football League. It's already a luxury to have a kicker who could consistently cut the field in half on the strength of his leg. But 80 yards?
Not that Longhorns coach Charlie Strong would throw Rose out there to regularly kick 60-yard-plus field goals, but if he notches several of successful makes this fall, we wonder how high his stock can rise for the 2016 NFL Draft.
Obviously, kickers are low on the todem pole and selected in late rounds by NFL teams, but a kicker who could consistently cut the field in half and in this case more than three-quarters has got to be considered a huge get for a franchise.
It's going to be interesting to track Rose over the course of the 2015 NCAA season to see how consistently long he can kick these field goals and how high he could go in the 2016 NFL Draft.
