Love Beats Cancer: Terminally Ill Man Exchanges I Dos At Bedside With His Girlfriend

Love prevails as a man diagnosed with a terminal cancer married his girlfriend of three years right on his hospital bed. Through the help of the nursing staff and other donors, the sickened man was able to experience the "best day of his life" even if he was already in the last stages of his disease. Keith Borum and Nina Scott exchanged "I Dos" on Thursday, July 9 at Keith's room in the Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, New York. According to Nina, the unique wedding was perfect.

Keith has been struggling against non-Hodgkin's lymphoma for about 18 months now. During the early part of 2015, he was rushed to the emergency department due to abdominal pain. He goes in and out of the hospital and the doctors told him that his cancer has reached its final stages. Keith has been under a lot of things, says Nina. He can't even walk and it has been really hard for him.

During Keith's long hospital admissions, he was able to talk with the staff and was able to express his feelings and plans of saving money to buy an engagement ring for Nina. The nurses then collaborated and came up with ways to raise money, not only for the rings, but for the wedding as well. The nurses actually gathered the money to buy the rings, says Christina Ware, one of the nurses. The rings cost $400. The cake, flowers, invitations and other goodies were donated by other hospital staff and different people in the local community. Family, friends and the hospital staff gathered around as the couple exchanged their vows, making the entire event extra special.

"The whole thing was great," Nina told ABC News. "I don't know what my favorite moment was." She said she could not imagine how their wedding could or would be. For her, the staff raised the bar high and that the couple could not have done it any better.

The couple, the minister and other witnesses wore blue hospital gowns atop their clothes to protect Keith from contracting anything that may cause him to get an infection.

Even in the midst of being sick and confined to his hospital bed, Keith was able to make himself silly by getting and wearing Nina's sunglasses. "He's everything. He's my life, he's my better half. So why not marry him?" says a smiling Nina.
