Duff Beer has long been the drink of choice for Homer Simpson and his fellow denizens of Springfield. If you've longed to achieve the same blank, drunken stare as Homer after chugging down a few of these brewskis, your wildest dreams are about to come true.
Real Duff Beer will finally be hitting stores, The Simpsons' owner 21st Century Fox revealed to The Wall Street Journal in a report published Friday. The media company plans to roll out the brew in Chile at first and then to other parts of South America and Europe by early next year.
"The company has been consulting with a brewmaster to get the flavor just right, and plans subtle packaging with no obvious nods to the TV show—just an exact replica of the cartoon brew that will play like an inside joke for Simpsons superfans," according to WSJ.
Though The Simpsons, which will be entering its 27th season this fall, is a global phenomenon, you still have to wonder why Fox would plan on launching the real-life version of Duff in Chile rather than the U.S. first. This is because Fox has been trying to hamper down on unauthorized versions of the famous beer in that part of the world for years.
As for American Simpsons fans, they can still get Duff in the official section for the animated series in the Universal Studios theme parks in Orlando and Hollywood. Though there are no plans to launch Duff in the U.S. just yet, a worldwide launch is not out of the question, Jeffrey Godsick, the president of Fox's consumer products division, told WSJ.
British brewmaster Paul Farnsworth has created the recipe framework for the manufacturers of Duff, which will be a premium lager with a hint of fruit and a caramel aromatic. The real-life Duff, which is noticeably more highbrow than the brew featured on The Simpsons, will be a stand-alone brand whose marketing efforts won't feature any characters from the show.
This isn't the first time a product from The Simpsons has crossed over into the real world. 7-Eleven locations were transformed into Kwik-E-Marts, the convenience store run by Apu in the show, in anticipation of The Simpsons Movie's release in 2007.
