Firefox smartphones are pretty rare, but now ZTE has decided to put its entry-level Open C Firefox OS smartphone up for sale on eBay in several countries. The Open C comes with a budget price and low-end specifications, but it will do the job for those in need of a basic smartphone.
ZTE first showed off the Open C at Mobile World Congress this February in Barcelona. Since then, ZTE has updated the specs a bit and given the device the Firefox OS 1.3 update.
Now, the ZTE Open C features a 4-inch display with a low resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. Although it is't Full HD, not by a long shot, it's still decent for a low-end smartphone. The Open C is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor, but it only has 512MB of RAM.
Luckily, Firefox OS is designed for low-end smartphones that don't pack a very big punch in terms of processing power. Although the Open C only has 4GB of memory built in, it does come with a MicroSD card slot for memory expansion. The smartphone also sports a 3-megapixel camera on the back side, a 1400mAh battery and 3G HSDPA connectivity.
The ZTE Open C is currently being offered as an eBay exclusive for a price of $99.99. Prospective customers in the United States, the UK, Germany, Russia and 20 more countries in Europe can buy the Firefox phone now. Unfortunately, only the black color option is available, so that great goldfish orange color we saw at MWC is out of the question for now.
Although it may not have the best specs, the ZTE Open C does have the advantage of Mozilla's open source Firefox OS, which has no licencing fees or weird restrictions like iOS or Android. For those who are interested in trying out Firefox OS on a cheap device, the ZTE Open C is a great choice. Anyone who wants a budget smartphone might also consider the Open C.
