Nearly 15 years after its last expansion, popular RPG video game title Baldur's Gate is finally getting a brand new expansion later this year.
The new expansion, titled Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear, takes place between events in Baldur's Gate I and Baldur's Gate II.
The original version of Baldur's Gate came out in 1998, a product of a then little-known game development studio called BioWare, who later made a name for itself with its Mass Effect and Dragon Age video game titles.
The new expansion comes courtesy some former BioWare employees, who spent a lot of time porting the original Baldur's Gate game and creating an expansion for it. The new game takes place shortly after the death of Sarevok, after the first game, but before the second game.
Baldur's Gate is a Dungeons & Dragons style RPG that remains popular with gamers today due to its unique storytelling and gameplay.
Siege of Dragonspear isn't some small piece of DLC, though. Developers promise around 25 hours of new gameplay with new areas to explore, new monsters to fight, new character companions and a new Shaman class. The original Baldur's Gate voice actors return to recreate their roles from the original games with music by Mass Effect composer Sam Hulick.
The new expansion also lets you choose your difficulty: for those just interested in story and not up to more challenging game play, the expansion lets you choose a story mode.
Expect Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear later this year on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android. The game also features a cross-platform multiplayer feature.
Here is the game's official synopsis:
"A crusade marches from the north, seizing supplies, forcing locals into military service, and disrupting trade along the Sword Coast. A charismatic warrior known as the Shining Lady leads this army, her background shrouded in mystery. Can the rumors be true-is she, like you, the child of a god?
The closer you get to the Shining Lady, the more you realize your father, the dead Lord of Murder still casts a long shadow upon your path. Baldur's Gate has put its faith in you, but you must determine whose interests you truly serve before you face the Shining Lady among the ruins of Dragonspear Castle..."
