Everyone's favorite Amazonian princess returns for a new three-part story arc in Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman #42.
Diana strives to do good in the world of humanity, often having to battle humans themselves to do what's best for them. Not only that, but she also often serves as peacekeeper, traveling to war-torn countries and meeting with diplomats to bring opposing sides together in peace.
It's this very thing that raises the ire of two particular goddesses, Strife and Eris, who find Wonder Woman's plans to save humanity ridiculous — so much so, they start making plans to throw a wrench in Wonder Woman's latest diplomatic mission to bring two rival countries together for a peace deal.
Will the goddesses succeed? Will Wonder Woman fail? We'll find the answers in this new story titled "Nine Days."
The writer of this new story arc for Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman is Karen Traviss, who does a wonderful job of showing us the Diana we know and love. This is the woman we turn to, even when we're the ones screwing up the world. There's also a humanity about Diana, especially when we see how frustrating it is to be her, trying to solve humanity's problems in spite of humans. This becomes especially difficult with two petty goddesses in the mix — but it serves the plot of this new storyline very well.
The artwork, by Andres Guinaldo, Raul Fernandez and Kelly Fitzpatrick is also really well done here. Wonder Woman appears as a strong and determined woman, and it isn't until the last few panels that we even see her costume. But from the moment we see a bespectacled Diana in a trench coat, looking very business-like, we know there's a superhero beneath that exterior. Here, Wonder Woman doesn't need the costume: she's still Wonder Woman in her dress suit and pumps.
There isn't a lot of action in the panels, although there's a hint that there's more to come. This story focuses more on Diana as a bringer of justice and peace, and the artwork reflects that in her frustrated facial expressions when she sees humans causing problems. She doesn't yet know about the goddesses, but it's likely that when she learns about them, we'll see an angry Diana, leading to action as she fights them.
Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman #42 is a good start to this new story, and as always, the worst part is waiting to see what happens next. How will Wonder Woman deal with Eris and Strife? Fortunately, this is a weekly title, so we'll soon know how things pan out.
