Back in 1999, one of the greatest animated movies ever made was released ... and it wasn't a Disney film.
Yes, The Iron Giant surprised everyone when it was just as good (or, depending on who you ask, even better) than many of Disney's own traditionally-animated feature films. It was a near-perfect example of how to take a well-known story archetype and infuse it with something special: sure, at its core, The Iron Giant is about a boy finding a dangerous pet (in this case, the titular Iron Giant) and trying to hide it until everyone finds out. However, the film succeeds not because of its overarching story but all of the tiny details: the characters, the setting, the writing, the animation — all of it is absolutely fantastic.
It's been over a decade since The Iron Giant debuted, and it seems as if Warner Bros. wants to do something special for the film's sweet sixteen party: not only is The Iron Giant returning to theaters for a limited run, but the movie's 'Signature Edition' will make its debut!
For two nights only, The Iron Giant's Signature Edition will make its debut in theaters: once on Sept. 30 and again on Oct. 4. As for anyone wondering what exactly is included in the Signature Edition, Warner Bros. and Fathom Events confirmed that two all-new scenes will be added into the film.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Fathom Events CEO John Rubey sounded just as excited as the fans themselves:
"We can't wait to bring this family favorite back [to] its home on the big screen ... The Iron Giant is meant to be seen and heard in movie theaters and this is a great chance for fans new and old to enjoy this classic, remastered with new scenes."
If you don't happen to live near one of the participating theaters, don't worry: the Signature Edition will be available digitally sometime this fall.
It's rare to see such a cult classic getting another shot at a theatrical run — hopefully, The Iron Giant has a better run the second time around.
The Iron Giant: Signature Edition will debut in theaters on Sept. 30, with a matinee run on Oct. 4. If you want to see if you're near one of the several participating theaters, head on over to the Fathom Events ticket page.
