The NFL has successfully held games at Wembley Stadium in London since 2007.
With growing enthusiasm for the NFL and American football in the United Kingdom, the league is about to make the gridiron experience that much better overseas. On Wednesday (July 8), according to ESPN, the NFL struck a 10-year deal with Tottenham Hotspur to play at least two games per year at the English Premier League soccer club's new state-of-the-art stadium, which will hold a capacity of roughly 60,000 fans and is scheduled to open in 2018.
"The state-of-the-art stadium, due to open in the summer of 2018, will feature a retractable grass field with an artificial surface underneath that would be used for NFL games," said the NFL and Tottenham Hotspur via a joint media statement. "This innovative field will add greater flexibility in the scheduling of games, with the NFL having its own playing surface for games held at this venue. This field will be multi-use and capable of hosting other sporting, entertainment and community events."
This marks the first time ever that the English Premier League and National Football League are collaborating in such fashion.
Designed renderings of the new stadium were tweeted out by Tottenham's official Twitter account...and the project looks amazing.
The fact that American football is already growing with wild popularity in London, will make the NFL that much more of a hit amongst Tottenham's ravenous fan base. Sounds like a touchdown for both parties!
