Though your summer reading is already in high gear, that stack of books you have to read probably feels a little light since you're still waiting to get your hands on the sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird, Go Set a Watchman.
But don't fret. Though Harper Lee's highly-anticipated novel is scheduled to be released July 14, you'll be able to start the book sooner than expected.
The Wall Street Journal will publish the first chapter of the book online on July 10. An audio sample of the chapter narrated by Reese Witherspoon will accompany the sneak preview of the book published on the WSJ website.
Since it was announced back in February that Lee would finally publish a follow-up to her iconic 1960 novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the world has been eagerly awaiting its release, so much so that Go Set a Watchman became the most pre-ordered book in publisher HarperCollins' history. Go Set a Watchman topped the Amazon Best Sellers list after the new book was announced, and it remains in that position today.
However, the novel's upcoming release has not been without controversy. Soon after the novel's announcement, many wondered if Lee, famously reclusive and long-resistant to the idea of producing a follow-up to To Kill a Mockingbird, had been the victim of elder abuse and exploitation. An investigation by the State of Alabama soon followed and was eventually closed with the allegations declared unfounded.
Written in the mid-1950s and submitted to her publishers before To Kill a Mockingbird, Go Set a Watchman takes place 20 years after Lee's first novel. The book follows Scout as she returns home to Maycomb to visit her father Atticus and other familiar characters from the small Alabama town.
