Season 6 Of 'The Walking Dead' To Include Backstory From The Comic

After last year's season finale of The Walking Dead, fans of the zombie drama desperately await the premiere of season six to find out what happens next.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the series' showrunner, Scott M. Gimple, spoke about what we can expect in season six and mentioned that the new episodes plan on taking a cue from backstory mentioned in The Walking Dead comic books that serve as a basis for the series.

One of those additions to the comics is the character of Heath, portrayed by actor Corey Hawkins. Gimple spoke about how excited he is in bringing that character to life on the screen and about how much the actor enjoys playing the role.

"There are other people that we're going to see throughout the season from the comics, and I'm excited for people to see it, but I don't want to tell them now," said Gimple. "I think a few minor remixes, but some direct stuff from the comic as well, as far as these characters go."

Gimple even went so far as to say that the first half of the new season almost seems as a prequel to events in the comics that occur in the second half of season six. He praised The Walking Dead comic book creator Robert Kirkman in how he gave the comics a history and part of the new season of the TV show will delve a little more into some of that story, showing events mentioned in the comics, but never seen.

The season five finale left us with Rick taking charge again in Alexandria, but not without some controversy: he shot Jessie's abusive husband in the face while Morgan watched on. This won't likely sit well with a lot of people (or maybe it will), but it's likely that this means more conflict to come for Rick. Gimple talked about the implications for that character going into season six, mentioning how in that season finale, Rick showed the people of Alexandria who he is.

"The onus was completely on him, but in the end he found a way, and providence found a way, that he could demonstrate to these people what they need to do and who he really is," said Gimple. "And now that he's done that, he seems to be in a terrific position to bring these people around to his way of thinking, and have it not be based in antagonism. But I will say, the world often gets in the way of Rick's plans."

The Walking Dead season six premiere airs on AMC in October.
