If you are a fan of fast-paced rhythm games, then you may have heard of a Playstation game from 2003 called Amplitude. The game combined tunnel racing with following musical instruments where different lanes represented instruments on a corridor you had to follow or move around in order to generate music.
The game was a sequel to a 2001 game for the Playstation 2 called Frequency, which was a similar experience where you generated music while traveling on lanes -- although it wasn't based on riding a hovercraft-like machine like its sequel was.
Amplitude was one of the games that paved the way for the music genre of familiar titles that spanned many sequels and became cult hits. These titles include game series such as those of Guitar Hero and Rock Band.
Now, there is a crowdfunding project in the works via Kickstarter to remake Amplitude or create a sequel based on its gameplay. It will come packed with updated visuals and features. The studio behind the original Amplitude, Harmonix, is currently trying to generate $775,000 in funds to make the project a reality.
The targeted release date is March 2015 and it is expected to be released on the Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 consoles. Check out the Kickstarter page as it offers pretty humorous pledge rewards and incentives.
If you pledge $3,500, you can dine with the CTO and CEO of the Harmonix development studio. Pledge just a $1 more at $3,501 and you can dine with the famous creator of titles such as Psychonauts, Tim Schafer, himself. However, "Tim gets to pick the restaurant," and it is "Bay Area only" adding a bit of humor to the pledge and the gaming king's mystique.
If you pledge $8,000 or more, Harmonix will actually throw you a party. The team will fly out to your house, play the game with you while partying with you and let you stream the party via Twitch.
These are just some of the pledge reward examples available as incentives. The Kickstarter page also has some screenshots and concept art available that shows some impressive visuals. It seems the game will truly embrace the sci-fi feel it aims to capture -- even more so than the original.
Harmonix had its hand in developing games such as Rock Band and Dance Central. It is also working on the upcoming Disney remake of Fantasia, called Fantasia: Music Evolved.
As of this writing, the Kickstarter page has generated $102,352 in pledges and has 17 more days to go.
