UN chief: 'Climate change is defining issue of our time, urgent action needed.'

During the Abu Dhabi Ascent climate change conference held at the United Arab Emirates, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon warned stakeholders in attendance that concrete actions against climate change should be taken. Moreover, the UN chief added that time is of the essence.

The effects of climate change can already be seen and felt in almost every location on the planet. This holds true for rich developed countries as well as nations from the developing world. Stakeholders from all over the world gathered in Abu Dhabi to discuss the implications of climate change on the future as well as address possible courses of action that might be taken to avoid the worst effects of climate change and global warming.

"Climate change is the defining issue of our time. If we do not take urgent action, all our plans for increased global prosperity and security will be undone," said the UN Secretary General during his opening remarks at the conference.

Over 1,000 representatives, VIPS, government authorities, policy makers and climate experts attended the Abu Dhabi Ascent climate change conference. Of the 1,000 in attendance, around 100 participants were ministers from government agencies. Also in attendance was Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber. Jaber is the UAE's Minister of State and Special Envoy for Energy and Climate Change. The conference is a two day event that will include various discussions on preparing for the negative effects of climate change and looking for effective methods of reducing carbon emissions.

During his speech at the conference, UN chief Ban stressed the important of taking action now while measures can still be taken. Ban also said that the foundations for tackling climate change must be solidified as soon as possible. The UN head also thanked the UAE for its pioneering efforts in securing a "low-carbon future" for the Middle East and the rest of the world. Ban also urged both the upper and lower ranks of the UAE government to join in a unified front against climate change. Aside from government heads and employees, the UN chief also called on other sectors of society including finance and business leader to join the effort.

The conference is especially important for Ban as he prepares the UN for another upcoming Climate Summit, which will be held in New York this coming Sept. 23.

"Our motto must be adopt and adapt. Adopt what works and adapt it for your nation, your business, your community," said the Secretary-General said. "Time is against us. Nature will not wait. The planet is sending us a message. We must listen."
