Fallout Shelter, Bethesda's mobile game spin-off for Fallout 4, was an instant success after it was officially released during E3. The (for now) iOS-only freemium game almost immediately rose to the top of the App Store download charts and gave Fallout fans something to dig their fingers into while waiting for the much anticipated game to finally hit shelves in November.
And now there's even more reason to start playing Fallout. Bethesda just announced that the first Fallout 4 character will be making a crossover into the mobile game. Preston Garvey of the Commonwealth Minutemen will be a new unlockable character.
Just as he will appear in Fallout 4, Preston Garvey's Fallout Shelter version will wield a Laser Musket as his weapon of choice.
As a legendary character, Preston Garvey won't be easily found by players, or vault dwellers as they are called. They will only be able to unlock this character by finding him in in-game lunchboxes (lunchboxes are the game's main currency) or by paying real-world money to buy lunchboxes.
Lunchboxes are used as rewards in the game but Bethesda also uses them as the only way to earn revenue from the free-to-play game by allowing players to purchase them online.
Launching the mobile Fallout Shelter game is said to be a smart marketing move on Bethesda's part - giving fans the news they've been waiting for that Fallout 4 would be released, and then revealing the mobile game as a "bonus" to keep them busy while waiting a few more months.
The addition of characters in the upcoming game will also help whet the appetites of Fallout fans as well as new gamers who are only being introduced to the Fallout franchise via the mobile game.
With Preston first in line to get the mobile app treatment, we can only guess that other favorite Fallout 4 characters will also follow suit.
