Gotham returns to Fox this September, and when it does, you can expect to see more of its wacky villains stepping up to the plate. Seeds were sown in the first season for a number of major villains, as we saw them inch closer toward their dark destinies (especially the Penguin).
In Season 2, those destinies are closer than ever. In fact, Gotham is promising to depict the origins of several major Batman villains this year. A new official description for the second season lists a couple of names in particular that should jump out at fans.
"The stakes are higher than ever as Gotham explores the origin stories of some of the most ambitious and depraved Super Villains, including The Riddler, The Joker and Mr. Freeze, and Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) uncovers more secrets from his father's past, in the Season Two debut on Monday, Sept. 21 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT)."
Joker is believed to have already appeared on the show once, in the first season episode "The Blind Fortune Teller." In that episode, actor Cameron Monaghan played a circus employee who murdered his own mother. When questioned by police, Monaghan channeled his inner Joker in ways that gave viewers chills.
Mr. Freeze, aka Victor Fries, on the other hand, has never appeared on the show (that we know of). But production members have stated their desire to bring him to the show since before the pilot aired. His addition to the show could come as a surprise revelation in the plot, as other Bat-characters have. There's no word yet on the casting of Victor Fries.
The description also mentions the origin of the Riddler, some of which we've already seen. Edward Nygma has been part of the show since it began.
Just yesterday, it was announced that an original villain is joining Gotham in Season 2, to be played by actor James Frain.
