In an interview with E!, Adam Beach (who plays Slipknot in the film) revealed that the method actor gave gifts only a jokester would send his co-stars.
Leto sent Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie a love letter — and since words couldn't bring to life what he was feeling, he also sent a "beautiful" live rat in a black box.

And the gifts didn't stop there. Along with a video message from the Joker himself, the cast also received a dead hog.
Leto sent the gifts after not being able to make it to the set. "Basically, what he said was, 'Guys, I can't be there but I want you to know I'm doing my work as hard as you guys,' " Beach told E!. "The video he showed is in character. It blew our minds away. Then we realized that day, this is real."
After seeing images of Leto in character and now knowing that he is method acting to submerge himself in the role, we can't wait to finally see his performance.
"He encompasses this beautiful man and he shows it in, 'Hello, how are you?'," Beach said. "But in an instant, he goes to psychotic behavior where you're in fear."
David Ayer's Suicide Squad will be released in theaters Aug. 5, 2016.
