Hurray for modernizing! Google has finally gotten on the band wagon and will now break up that huge, clunky Drive app into individual apps. Google announced that separate Docs and Sheets apps will now be available for iOS and Android.
Everyone loves Google's app suite. It's become the go-to word processor, presentation maker and spreadsheet number cruncher for mobile device users for years. Now that Apple's made iWork free on all its iPads and Microsoft is finally selling the Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel as individual apps, Google has some competition.
Lucky for Google, a lot of people love Google Drive's apps and want to keep their info stored and shared for free in Google's nice cloud. Even though people don't want to leave Google Drive, a lot of the would still prefer to have the option to download only the Google productivity apps that they really need, instead of having one giant app to deal with.
Now, Google plans to break down the Drive app into separate apps. The new Google Docs and Google Sheets will soon arrive in the iOS and Google Play app stores for all to download. The services will function the same way and the Google Drive app will still exist, but now you'll be able to choose. If you only want Docs on your iPad because you type a ton of essays, but don't really want or need Presentation or Sheets, you don't have to have them around.
The Google Drive app will probably act more like a typical cloud storage app, such as Dropbox or OneDrive. All the other apps included in the Drive will also probably get their own apps soon. Although it may sound like a simple change, it's sure to make a lot of people happy and might allow Google to add many cool, new features to the apps in the future.
