Oh, baby! Now, that's some catch!
During the second inning of what turned out to be a 10-inning thriller between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs in the Windy City on Tuesday night, one fan made a catch for the ages.
Keith Hartley managed to snag a pop-up foul ball and rob Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez with an amazing bare, right-handed catch, all while cradling and feeding his baby Isaac with his left hand. All in a dad's day of work, right?
"So, I'm just trying to protect him and I see the ball coming up and it just kind of fell in my hand," Hartley told CSN, as reported by MLB.com.
The first-base umpire originally ruled the play a foul ball, but Dodgers manager Don Mattingly challenged the call and it was overturned and ruled fan interference for the third out of the inning.
Gonzalez didn't seem to mind being part of the play that became an instant Internet sensation, joking to MLB.com, "it would have been more impressive if the baby would have caught it."
The Cubs wound up winning the game, 1-0, and fielding questions about the catch rather immediately thereafter.
"That was outstanding," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said of Hartley's multitasking catch. "You worry about the baby, of course, but it looked like he had it under control. It looked like he did it before, almost. That was a great play."
