Cheers to Joe Paterno...or at least that's what one Pennsylvania brewery is saying.
According to the Associated Press, the Duquesne Brewing Company in Latrobe, PA. announced Monday that it's making a special brew of beer to honor the late and legendary Penn State football coach. The Vienna-style lager will be available in mid-August via 12-ounce cans, featuring the iconic coach's image and laundry list of accomplishments in his 45 years at the helm of the Nittany Lions gridiron program, including being the NCAA Division I all-time winningest coach with 409 victories.
The Duquesne Brewing Company is collaborating with Paterno's family on the beer, even ready to donate a portion of the proceeds to a charity of their choice. In addition to being the headquarters of Duquesne, Latrobe is also the hometown of Paterno's widow, Sue, making this effort that much more special and not close to home, but home itself.
Penn State fired Paterno in November 2011 during the time of assistant coach Jerry Sandusky's child sex abuse scandal. Paterno died of lung cancer in January 2012 and his last 111 victories were wiped clear six months later in July as part of heavy NCAA sanctions against Penn State.
He would have his 111 vacated wins restored this past January, though, once again making him college football's all-time winningest coach. Even before then, there seemed to be a separation from Paterno's coaching greatness and the child sex abuse scandal that went on allegedly unbeknownst to him.
This toast to JoePa is just another example.
