A PlayStation 4 (PS4) console with double the storage is officially en route, as Sony just announced the launch of a PS4 with a 1TB hard drive.
The PS4 has so far offered 500GB of storage, which often proved insufficient for some users. Many popular titles nowadays take up quite a bit of storage, and higher-capacity consoles were the next logical step. With its latest PS4 announcement, Sony is following the lead of its main rival on the console market.
Microsoft already announced a new Xbox One version with 1TB of storage earlier this month, saying that a higher storage option was among the most frequent request from fans. Sony is now following suit and is gearing up to launch a 1TB version of its PS4 console as well.
The news confirms previous leaks, as the 1TB PS4 recently surfaced in the FCC database signaling an imminent debut. Sony has yet to offer details regarding the U.S. launch of this console version with double the storage, but said the 1TB PS4 will hit commercial availability in Europe and PAL territories next month, on July 15. The company should announce U.S. availability soon enough.
"Offering twice the storage of the existing PS4, you'll be able to download more of the games you love to your PS4, extend your play with more great add-on content and save and share even more of your best gaming highlights," Sony touts in its announcement on the PlayStation Blog.
The new variant is called the Ultimate Player Edition and will sport no other differences from the original PS4 except for storage size. When it comes to pricing, Sony noted in its blog post that interested buyers should contact their local retailers for more details.
When Microsoft announced its new Xbox One version with 1TB of storage, it also discounted the 500GB version of the console. Sony, however, made no mention so far regarding whether it will adopt a similar strategy and cut the price of its existing PS4 with 500GB of storage.
More information will surely become available closer to launch, as retailers announce their pricing for the 1TB PS4. With a July 15 release in Europe and PAL regions, a U.S. launch for the higher-capacity console should be just around the corner.
