EA is bringing back Mirror's Edge in a big way with Mirror's Edge Catalyst — and that includes ditching guns.
When the original Mirror's Edge released in 2008, there was nothing else like it on the market. The game served as a first-person parkour simulator, featuring fast and fluid gameplay while maintaining an amazing sense of forward momentum.
That is, until guns became involved. For the most part, Mirror's Edge is about getting from point A to point B as fast as possible, barreling over enemies in your way by disarming or simply outrunning them. There were more than a few moments in the title, however, when players felt like they had to pick up a gun from a fallen enemy and shoot their way out. These moments were few, but they didn't mesh well with the overall idea of the game and felt unnecessary.
It's good news, then, that EA has confirmed the new Mirror's Edge reboot won't feature usable firearms. EA made mention of a shooting-free game during its E3 press conference, but Mirror's Edge Catalyst senior producer Sara Jansson confirmed it in a new interview with Polygon.
"In Mirror's Edge Catalyst, you won't be using any guns at all," Jansson said. "We've completely removed that aspect of the game. You can't even pick them up."
Whew. That's just one of the changes coming to the Mirror's Edge reboot. While it will star the same central character and feature many of the same gameplay elements, this new game is a fresh start. It will be an origin story for Faith, the game's protagonist. And while it isn't a sequel, it will deal with many of the same themes of the first game, such as personal freedom and all-too-powerful corporations.
The game looks absolutely gorgeous as well. Now that we know for sure guns won't be coming into the picture, here's hoping it will play even better than it looks.
