Nintendo is a newcomer on the scene when it comes to interactive video game figures with their Amiibo toy line, but now they are partnering with the biggest "toys to life" name in the industry for something completely new.
Of course, we are talking about none other than Activision's Skylanders series. A new Skylanders game is on the way this holiday season in the form of Skylanders Superchargers, which will add vehicles to the mix.
That isn't all, however. Announced during Nintendo's E3 Direct, the house that Mario built will have Nintendo exclusive Skylander figures based on iconic Nintendo characters coming to Superchargers.
Bowser and Donkey Kong are being transformed into never-before-seen forms for their Skylander toy debut. The toys will only work on Superchargers for Nintendo platforms, but each figure also serves a dual purpose. The base of each figure can be rotated, transforming the Donkey Kong and Bowser Skylander figures into Amiibo that will work with any Amiibo-compatible Nintendo game.
During the Nintendo Direct, Nintendo President of America Reggie Fils-Aime discussed how Nintendo traditionally has been very protective of their IP and characters. We've seen Nintendo slowly but surely partner with outside companies to bring Nintendo characters to an even larger audience in the form of upcoming mobile games and the Tecmo-Koei-developed Hyrule Warriors.
This latest partnership with Activision and Skylanders just goes to show that Nintendo is serious about adapting to the times.
