Beloved fantasy author Terry Pratchett, best known for his Discworld book series, passed away earlier this year. While fans mourn his loss, the author still has another Discworld novel for them to look forward to, which will be released on September 1.
According to Pratchett's daughter Rhianna, this will be the last book in the series. Fans have been wondering whether Rhianna – herself a writer for comic books, video games, TV and film – might take over her father's fantasy world.
She says that will not be the case.
"No. I'll work on adaptations, spin-offs, maybe tie-ins, but the books are sacred to dad," she wrote on Twitter, in response to a fan's question. "That's it. Discworld is his legacy. I shall make my own."
She then added: "To reiterate — no I don't intend on writing more Discworld novels, or giving anyone else permission to do so."
Rhianna went on to say that her father's assistant Rob Wilkins will not pen any Discworld novels either, with the chance of an "unfinished writings compilation" seeming unlikely.
It seems a shame that the Discworld series will come to an end so soon, but fans hardly have any right to complain about a lack of reading material. Pratchett was nothing if not a hard worker. The Shepherd's Crown will be his 41st –and now, likely last – novel set in the Discworld universe, in which the world sits atop four giant elephants riding a colossal turtle. His last Discworld story will revolve around the teenage witch Tiffany Aching.
Pratchett also recently finished the The Long Utopia, the fourth novel in a sci-fi series he co-authored with Stephen Baxter. The Long Utopia will be published on June 23 in the United States.
You can read some of Rhianna Pratchett's work in the ongoing Tomb Raider comic from Dark Horse.
