Fans of Will Ferrell's Anchorman character, Ron Burgundy, know the news man has a way with words.
Whether it's bragging about his "many leather-bound books" or that his "apartment smells of rich mahogany," Ron Burgundy is a man of utmost class and prestige — not to mention absolute lunacy.
Case in point: this past Thursday morning, ESPN Sportscenter allowed Burgundy to call Cincinnati Reds second baseman Ivan De Jesus Jr.'s home run from the day before against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Here's how Burgundy saw the long ball:
"That's Ivan De Jesus [pronounced like 'Jesus' in Jesus Christ] at the plate. You know... why don't more people name their kids Jesus? He was the best there ever was. And watch what this Jesus fella did... 3-2 fastball and he delivers. [Screaming] It's straight up into the air! Look at that ball soar. Hundreds, maybe even thousands of feet up in the air."
There's so much to like in this clip, it's insane. Predictably and deliberately mispronouncing Ivan's last name like Jesus Christ is one thing, but the straight-face observation of hundreds, maybe even thousands of feet up in the air is absolute classic Burgundy at his best.
ESPN should seriously consider bringing Burgundy into the fold more often, allowing him to call more highlights. The slow-paced, lengthy baseball season warrants a shot of humor every now and then — and who better than Ron Burgundy to deliver. But a warning: Burgundy's commentary would have viewers saying, "Boy, that escalated quickly."
