'Ratchet & Clank' On The PS4 Isn't A Remake, And It Looks Amazing

Fans of video game Ratchet & Clank have been excited about the PlayStation 4 remastered version of the popular PlayStation 2 game since game developer Insomniac Games announced it at last year's E3.

However, Insomniac now confirms that what was once thought as a remake of Ratchet & Clank is not that at all: in fact, the new PlayStation 4 version of Ratchet & Clank is a completely new game.

"Ratchet and Clank is a new game that takes elements from the original," says the game's production director Shaun McCabe. "What we imagined when we started was a curated first Ratchet experience."

Insomniac initially set out to remake the game for the PS4, but got inspired in the process and ended up with a brand new game, which obviously explains why the game's release got delayed until 2016.

So this is sort of like everyone's favorite PS2 Ratchet & Clank, but Insomniac added a lot of new features to this title, such as new planets, new weapons and weapons upgrades, and even new gameplay focused solely on Clank. The new game offers about 10-12 hours of gameplay, which is a bit more than the original.

However, the new game won't be the only piece of media in the Ratchet & Clank franchise: Insomniac also plans on releasing a film featuring the popular duo. Insomniac released a trailer for the film at least year's E3:

So what does the new version of Ratchet & Clank, the game look like? Sony recently released a video with gameplay footage and, as you can see below, it's gorgeous.

The idea between the new title and the game is to introduce fans to Ratchet & Clank who may not have played the older version. However, Insomniac believes that the new game will appeal to existing fans of the franchise, too.

"It just gives people a new entry point, and the film also acts as a new entry point for the series," says Insomniac community lead James Stevenson. "They really complement each other."

Expect to hear more about Ratchet & Clank at next week's E3 and pick up a copy of the PS4 game in spring, 2016.
