Chicken recall: Prime Pak Foods recalls 24,000 tenders for undeclared allergens and misbranding

The United States Department of Agriculture recently announced the recall of 24,000 pounds of breaded chicken breast tenders from Sugar Lake Farms, part of Prime Pak Foods in Georgia, due to misbranding and undeclared allergens.

According to the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the products are cooked spicy breaded chicken breast chunks with the product code 77448 printed on the box and breaded chicken breast tenders with the product code 77422 printed on the box, both from Sugar Lake Farms. The products are formulated with egg and wheat, which are allergens that were undeclared on the product label.

The products that are being recalled were produced from Dec. 12, 2012, to March 21, 2014, bearing the establishment number "P-9165" in the USDA mark of inspection. These products were distributed to restaurants, hotels and other institutions nationwide.

The FSIS inspector initially learned about the problem on April 17 after noticing that the ingredients listed on the product packaging were incomplete. There are no reports about adverse reactions to the products, but consumers with egg and wheat allergies could be seriously affected. People with allergic reactions to egg may experience nasal inflammation, hives, asthma, gastrointestinal issues, dizziness, fatigue, rapid pulse or constriction of airways when in contact with it. People with wheat allergies or celiac disease may experience the same symptoms and could also find it difficult to swallow and breathe.

The FSIS also announced the recall of 96,000 pounds of Oscar Mayer Classic Wieners due to wrong product labeling. Per the recall statement, the products were formulated with milk, a known allergen, but it was not declared on the product label. The USDA categorized the recall as Class I, which is "a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death."

Two products are being investigated. These are the 16 oz. "Classic Wieners Made with Turkey & Chicken, Pork Added" individual consumer packages with a use by 16 Jun 2014 date and product code of "044700000632" and 16 oz. "Classic Cheese Dogs Made with Turkey & Chicken, Pork Added, and Pasteurized Cheese Product" retailer packages with a use by 16 Jun 2014 date and case code of "00447000005300." Both products were made on March 2 and March 3 of 2014 and bear an establishment number of "Est. 537H" found in the USDA inspection mark.
