Over 4 Million Copies Of 'Witcher 3: Wild Hunt' Sold In Two Weeks

CD Projekt Red announced that since its May 19 release, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has sold over 4 million copies.

The video game developer's co-founder Marcin Iwiński celebrated the achievement by thanking fans for making the game such a success in an open letter.

"Four million RPG fans spending their hard-earned money on our game is a sign that we did something right, and you can be sure that we'll harness all that positive energy and make the upcoming expansions worthy of the grand adventure that you're telling us Wild Hunt already is," Iwiński writes.

Iwiński also thanked gamers for providing "positive feedback and support," adding that they are "humbled by the scores the game has received all around the world."

To put this major milestone into perspective, in 2013, CD Projekt Red announced that The Witcher series made $6 million in sales collectively. The series began with The Witcher 1 in 2007, followed by The Witcher Enhanced Edition in 2008, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (for PC) in 2011, followed by the Xbox 360 version in 2012. The Witcher 3 is the Polish studio's first multi-platform game, available for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

According to the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) report on sales, demographic and usage data, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was the top selling video game of 2014 by units sold, followed by Madden NFL 15, Destiny, Grand Theft Auto V, and Minecraft.

After publisher Bethesda revealed Fallout 4, sales from the most recent titles in the series rose on Amazon's PC & Video Game Movers & Shakers chart. Sales for Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition rose 755 percent in just 24 hours, whereas sales for the original PS3 version increased by 611 percent, and sales for the New Vegas Ultimate Edition increased by 321 percent.

After launching on October 19, Fallout: New Vegas made over $5 million in sales in just weeks.

Last year, Skyrim became one of the top 20 bestselling games of all time across all platforms, after selling 20 million copies since its launch in November 2011.

ESA found that role-playing video games only made up 9.5 percent of best-selling games by units sold.

Still, there's no surprise that The Witcher 3 has seen success thus far. The company sold 1.5 million copies of the game before being released, and was estimated to sell as much as 7 million copies by the end of the year. With over 4 million copies sold in just weeks, it's well on its way to reaching the prediction.
