American Pharoah raced into the record books this past Saturday afternoon, clinching the Belmont Stakes to become the 12th horse to win the American Triple Crown.
But way before American Pharoah sent 90,000 raucous fans into a frenzy, winning the Belmont Stakes by five and a half lengths, Secretariat won the same race at the same track. His 31 lengths back in 1973 remains a Belmont Stakes record. (To win a race by 31 lengths rewrites the word dominant). Secretariat, also a Triple Crown winner, is regarded as arguably the greatest racing horse of all time.
Just imagine if American Pharoah and Secretariat raced in their primes. Well, the minds at the Wall Street Journal took that idea one step further and made it happen — weaving footage of the two great race horses side-by-side at their respective Belmont Stakes races.
What ensues is a heated race, in which American Pharoah edges Secretariat out for the victory. Well, at least in WSJ's simulation. Oh, the thrill of technology.
Pretty cool, considering both legendary horses dominated in their respective Belmont Stakes victories and are easily two of the best race horses ever. We guess this is just American Pharoah's time... even against the greatest race horse of them all.
According to Forbes, American Pharoah is currently worth nearly $50 million. His breeding rights were sold to Coolmore Ashford Stud for a reported $13.8 million late last year... you know, way before the horse became a Triple Crown winner.
